Link begging is the practice of identifying link prospects, usually through competitor backlink analysis, and then contacting each one of those sites and begging for a link. Link begging typically ignores the original context of the link, as well as the probable motivation of the linker. Not only that, it’s potentially destructive to an organization’s industry relationships and the link builder’s will to live.

Engaging the experts and bloggers in your space can lead to far greater returns on your time and effort. Engagement will also make you happier – it emphasizes community, participation and recognizing the good work of others. Here are four content models and outreach suggestions for engagement-based link building.

These are listed in a rough order of progression that should help to grow your publisher relationships.

1) Aggregate and Curate Great Content
What are the best blog posts, articles, PDFs, Videos, discussion threads, twitter feeds, conferences, news sites and social networking sites in your niche? Research ALL the resources in your space and then organize them into meaningful categories. Focus on the categories that contain people you’d like to engage with in the group interview phase.

Simply listing the resources is not ideal, though it’s certainly far easier. It’s better to spend some time thinking about how to best present your resource aggregation in a way that makes it easier for your readers to make decisions about what links to click on. Here’s an excellent example: Link Building Master Class

Once you’ve created your resource aggregation – ideally with 100+ resources from 100+ different sources – email these folks and let them know that they were mentioned in your round up. Ask them, if they think it’s worthy, to share it with their audience.

Most importantly, while mentioning the resource, ask them if they want to participate in your group interview…

2) The Group Interview
The group interview can be a powerful way to build links, reciprocity and high-value content. As noted above, we recommend that you request that people answer group interview questions AS you outreach to let them know that you included their resource in your roundup. This warms them up and increases the likelihood that they will link to your resource. Further it indicates that you genuinely believe they add value to the space.

Once you start to get some affirmative responses begin to work on your questions. Generate your interview questions by reviewing previous expert interviews in your space. Aggregate questions and look for angles that haven’t been touched on before. You could also hit controversial topics, or get reactions to some of the latest news. Our recommendation is to keep your questions to about about 5 or so.

Here is an example of a group interview we did recently, and here is one we admire that takes the group interview to a whole new level. If you have design resources available we highly recommend the second course.

Once you have completed and published your work, reach out to the participants to let them know their interview is live. It’s a good idea to ask them to mention it to their readers and Twitter followers as well, though this is not always necessary

3) Solo Interviews
Solo interviews work best – in terms of link generation – when they’re interviews with notable experts in your industry. Another way to generate a list of solo interview subjects is to crack open your analytics and see which of your experts drove the most traffic to your site through their promotion efforts. Which of your experts’ tweets about the group interview got retweeted the most? Which experts linked directly from their blogs?

These folks would all make excellent candidates for follow up solo interviews. Make sure that you’re asking new questions that probe into genuine areas of passion for your experts. Treat these solo interview questions with the utmost concern and attention to the subject’s background and history. Learn as much as you can about each specific subject and use what you learn to guide your line of questioning.

Outreach for solo interviews is a little less intensive. You should primarily let the subject know the interview is up. If this subject has been interviewed before, consider making a list of the sites that link directly to these interviews and letting folks there know there’s a new interview up. You could also comment the previous interviews, as a further interview is highly-relevant.

4) Create Interesting “Writing Assignments”
In creating a writing assignment or prompt for your space you first come up with an intriguing concept or question – perhaps one left over from your interview questions. Then you answer this question yourself and implore your readers to do the same. The goal is to make it something that others would genuinely have the urge to write about in their next blogging session.

Another along the writing assignment lines is to just send the question to a number of folks and ask them to answer it on their blog. This “distributed group interview” can often result in links when the authors mention who prompted them to write in the first place. Consider aggregating their answers on your blog, and even highlighting the best paragraphs from each person.

In closing, don’t put yourself through the agony of link begging. Get creative, get engaging and use your questions to generate links, relationships and targeted traffic to your website.

In the past I’ve spoken about why I turned off blog comments, but it was mostly from a time/labor perspective. Now I have another reason, one that affects everyone from an SEO Perspective. In some cases. leaving comments on will negatively impact your rankings and traffic. In case you missed it, in yesterday’s post I spoke about how Google is being more aggressive in trying to figure out the proper date for a post and displaying it in the SERP’s. Comments are one of the key tools they use. So is having a date in a Google SERP listing a bad thing?

In some cases, having a date in your SERP is a good thing. If someone is looking for an answer or information and comes across a listing with a recent date, they are more likely to click that listing. If your listing happens to have a date and it’s recent, that’s a bonus for you. If your listing shows up and has an old date, you’re more likely to not get clicked because readers feel that your information might be old and outdated. Is this fair? No. But it’s the truth.

I’ve spoken before about the value of creating evergreen content for your website. But if you play by the rules and do that now, you’re leaving yourself wide open to Google slitting your throat under the misguided premise of user experience. Let’s have an example. Is a post that’s 5 years old about how to paint your living room better or worse than a post from the past year about how to paint your living room? The correct answer is you don’t know until you’ve read them. But if you don’t think the post with the newer date will get more clicks, you need to get your head out of the sand. Are there queries where date plays a role? Sure. In a query about what dress a celebrity wore at the recent awards show, the date plays huge factor. But for a lot of queries it doesn’t matter at all. However, Google’s algo isn’t smart enough to know when date plays a role and to only show the date when it matters, so they show it all the time. Those publishers who are collateral damage get screwed … unless they do something about it.

My recommendation is to remove any and all dates from the page after 3-6 months. Removing the post date from the article meta information area is easy. If you have comments, you have to monkey with the code to remove the date, or you can go hardcore and turn them off entirely. You need to remove any traces of publication dates from the page. Now if you were really aggressive, you could actually forge the publication date on the page … Not that I’m encouraging that kind of behavior. I’m just presenting it as an alternative for educational purposes and to be thorough

This is the kind of information you need to be aware of and decide how you are going to deal with when going forward. You could sit back and wait and hope no one steals your traffic, or you could feed Google the info you want them to have–and nothing more. Personally, I don’t like leaving my fate up to chance.

<a href="http://www.wolf-howl.com/seo/google-page-date/"class="post_image_link" title="Permanent link to How Google is Reverse Engineering Page Dates">

In recent weeks I’ve noticed a disturbing new trend in Google SERP’s: Google has become much more aggressive at trying to reverse engineer the publication date of a post/page.First let’s be clear about what we’re discussing. In some cases, when you do a search, Google will show a date in the listing. See the example below:

Initially, Google only looked at the date that was near the H1/Title of the page and, if it found something, it used that as the date in the SERP’s. This was fairly easy to override: when a post hit a certain age you could “remove” the date with a date based trigger and the date would disappear from the SERP’s. Now, however, Google has gotten a lot more aggressive in trying to assign a date to a page/post. Here are some methods I’ve seen them use:

Full format dates inside the main content of pages (month/day/year)

Dates in the comments, when no other date appears on a page

Decoding dates in URL’s (I have seen them decode 20091225 and 12252009 formats)

I have a few sites in which I use date format URL’s; at this point, I am giving very serious consideration to changing that procedure. In fact, I’m testing as we speak. Issuing a massive sitewide 301 is a dangerous thing and not something I’d recommend for everyone. That said, if you like to roll the dice and are on Wordpress, give Dean’s Permalink Migration plugin a try. It makes the whole process pretty painless.

Today’s post is answer to a question from Curedream:

Is there really any value in getting links from the Yahoo directory

I’m going to move that up a bit and tackle directories in general. In my opinion, yes, there is value in getting your website listed in some directories–but not all. The trick is figuring out which ones matter most.

IMHO there are four directories that every website should try to be listed in: Yahoo, <a href="http://www.wolf-howl.com/go/businesscom/"title="Business.com" >Business.com, <a href="http://botw.org/"title="Botw " >Botw and <a href="http://www.dmoz.org/"title="DMOZ" >DMOZ. Three of those are require an annual review fee. DMOZ is free; however, getting into DMOZ is considerably harder than it used to be. I recommend submitting and not obsessing over it if you don’t get in.

You want to be in these directories because they help with your link profile and give you a good base to build upon. They also help provide a bit of relevancy and context for the search engines (see this interview with Greg Hartnett of BOTW for more information).

Once you get beyond the top tier, are there any directories that are worth being listed in? It depends. First, you want to navigate to the directory page you are likely to be listed on, copy that URL, and search for it in Google. Look for the cached date to see when the page was last crawled. The longer it has been, the worse it is: anything over 45 days is trouble, anything over 75 days is a real danger sign. Work your way back through the directory 1-2 levels, checking the cache dates again. Look at the pages themselves. When was the last time they were updated? Unless you have an obscure topic, you want something that was updated recently. Type in the title of the page you will be on and add the word “directory”. Does that page show up in the SERP’s? Look at the directory with services like <a href="http://compete.com/"title="compete" >compete and <a href="http://www.quantcast.com/"title="quantcast" >quantcast to see how much traffic they are getting (remember these services are estimates).

What you are trying to do is get an idea of how important the search engines think the directory is, how likely they are to crawl your link and give it credit, and how much traffic (if any) the directory is likely to send you.

What are some second tier directories you should look at:

<a href="http://www.avivadirectory.com/"title="Aviva" >Aviva, <a href="http://www.dirjournal.com/"title="Directory Journal" >Directory Journal, <a href="http://www.gimpsy.com/"title="Gimpsy" >Gimpsy, <a href="http://www.goguides.org/"title="GoGuides" >GoGuides, Jayde, <a href="http://www.joeant.com/"title="JoeANT" >JoeANT, RubberStampped, <a href="http://www.skaffe.com/"title="Skaffe" >Skaffe, <a href="http://www.uncoverthenet.com/"title="Uncover the Net" >Uncover the Net, <a href="http://www.web-beacon.com/"title="Web Beacon" >Web Beacon, <a href="http://www.wowdirectory.com/"title="Wow Directory" >Wow Directory.

You should also try typing in your keyword or vertical category + the word “directory” to look for specialized vertical directories. Be on the lookout for low quality directories and don’t waste your money.

Lastly I would stagger your directory submissions. Don’t lump them all into one month just to cross off your to-do list unless you are an already established website with inbound links. If you are new, spread them out over 3-4 months starting with the most important.

Disclaimer: this post does contain some affiliate links and links to current and past advertisers. I would have linked to them anyway, so go look somewhere else cause these aren’t the droids you are looking for.
Hiring in House" />

One of the first considerations for a web site owner is how to get the content you need at fair prices. Most serious web site developers have little to no time to create the most important aspect of a web site – the content. Outsourcing content creation to a company has many advantages. However, hiring in house writers can give you a great deal of control and flexibility that companies cannot provide. Some web site owners will even do both.

Outsourcing Content Creation

When you outsource content creation to a company or firm, you can trust that you are backed up by experienced editors and managers that know what it takes to produce good quality SEO content. In addition, the prices of a group of writers are often much lower than the price structure of in house writers or individuals. The average individual writer charges $0.09 to $0.12 per word. The average good writing company charges $0.06 to $0.08. Some of the other advantages of outsourcing content creation include:

Faster Turnaround Time – You have a large pool of writer that can deliver your content quickly back to you.
Guarantees – You will often be given content quality and delivery guarantees that protect you in the event of a problem.
Differences in Style – Different editorial styles can bring a great deal of life and depth to your web site. With multiple writers working on a set of pages, your readers might enjoy some different approaches.

Some of the consequences of outsourcing content creation could include:

Differences in Style – Although it can be a benefit, style differences in your web site can also become a curse. Too many style differences can quickly distract readers and make them wish that one style was universal.
Reliability – Especially if you try to find a writer on the forums to save money, there are some reliability concerns when outsourcing content creation.

Hiring in House Writers

If you choose to hire in house writers, you will likely need to pay higher prices than when you outsource content creation. Depending on how often you need those writers, you are asking them to make a time commitment to your web site. Typical in house writers should earn between $0.05 to $0.08 per word. This might seem high. However, remember that you can demand much more of your writers if you pay them well. Pay them enough so that they want to keep their job and will go great lengths to please you with their writing. Other advantages to in house writers include:

Choice – You can choose the style and skill level of your writers by interviewing them and testing them before you put them on the payroll.
Writer Consistency – As you continue to work with your writers, you will become aware of what they enjoy writing and how you can capitalize on their interests to get better content.

Some disadvantages to hiring in house writers include:

Turnaround Time – Depending on the size of your staff, it might take much longer to receive content than it would by outsourcing it.
Keeping Writers Busy – You may be tempted to hire a vast team of writers to make sure that you can get a 50 page project done is a single day. However, remember that you will need to continue to keep such a team busy with more work to keep them on staff.

While many web site owners have chosen to go the route of hiring in house writers for content creation, it might be best to have a few go to in house article writers and outsource the rest of your content creation needs. If you have a few reliable writers that you can go to for urgent or very important projects, you can have an outside company or writing firm handle the remainder of the content that you need every week.

The easy answer is no. The explanation is bit more involved. Any tool or service that is not put out by Google is going to fall somewhere between a really good approximation and an educated guess because, at the very least, Google has access to a lot of information. Since the general public doesn’t isn’t using the same data, it’s impossible for them to come up with the same answer.

Here’s an example: this is a link to the website for Cake Boss, a popular cooking show about cake decorating. Here’s a link to page about the merger of the Internet Public Library and the Librarians Internet Index. If you look at both pages, they have a pagerank of four. However, that value doesn’t show the trust and authority scores. Anyone who has been around SEO for a while knows that getting a link from IPL.org is a really big deal, and it’s one of the sites Google really trusts. That’s the value that an experienced SEO can bring to the table.

Now I’m not knocking SEOMOZ or any other tools. I use the SEOMOZ tools on a regular basis and am a paid member. But we know that Google has internal scores for a website’s trust and authority. Without being able to see them directly, it requires experience and bit of guesswork to try and figure them out for yourself. Most tools are not sophisticated enough to manage those calculations.

So, at the end of the day, you need to use your brain. Don’t just blindly follow what any tool or report says. Things may look equal on the surface but there may be underlying differences that require you to dig to find the truth.

Good copywriting does more than just explain the details of a website’s products or services. Copywriting that sells has to come off as more than informative. It needs to speak to a person on an emotional level, giving them hope while getting the point across fast. It also needs to compel a person to take action.

The biggest weakness of the average website today is its copywriting. Getting an awesome design is the easy part of having an online presence; saying your piece – intelligently – is much more challenging. Yet that’s what makes sales

This post looks at three internet marketing websites with exceptionally engaging copy. They lay out what they do in a conversational and clear manner, striking a chord with visitors that solves their problem and compels them to buy.

Traffic Geyser – The Power of Social Proof

In their video sales letter, Traffic Geyser does a great job of speaking to listeners as if he or she is a friend just hanging out right there with Mike Koenigs, Co-Founder of Traffic Geyser. While this video sales letter provides a little more hype than Infusionsoft’s does, it still offers friendly, informative, smart copy that includes success stories in an uncomplicated format that leaves readers wanting to learn more.

Take Aways:

•	Write conversational copy that sounds like it’s from a friend who really wants to help the reader achieve their goals instead of strictly providing information.

•	When the goal is lead generation, always leave readers wanting more and provide an easy sign up form so they can get more.

Infusionsoft – Genuine Personalization

If there’s one website that gives serious internet entrepreneurs hope for turning their business around to really start making a profit, it’s Infusionsoft. Through their engaging, yet informative content, Infusionsoft shows how they relate to businesses that may not be doing well by giving their problem a name, ‘follow up failure.’

Going the extra step by having Infusionsoft CEO and Co-Founder Clate Mask speak the sales copy via video on the homepage, really takes the copy a step further in personally addressing the needs of entrepreneurs.

The true desire to help an entrepreneur that comes through in the video copy is enhanced by the professional and genuine nature of Clate Mask.

He’s believable, personable, and inspires trust while the straightforward, down to earth copywriting does an excellent job of compelling visitors to learn more.

Take Aways:

•	Solve the reader’s problem in your copywriting by giving the problem a name and showing how your product or service can help.

•	Choosing the right speaker for a video sales letter is crucial to its success, regardless of how compelling the copy is.

Butterfly Marketing – Selling Through Telling

Mike Filsaime’s website, Butterfly Marketing, opens with headlines that grab your attention before the sales copy takes you straight into the many incredible success stories of internet entrepreneurs using the Butterfly Marketing product. In fact, you don’t get to the actual sales letter until after reading a whopping 22 success stories, many featuring proof and audio testimonials.

The strength of this lengthy sales letter comes in knowing how to tell a story using testimonials, which builds trust. The length of this sales letter doesn’t detract from its success because it flows very naturally and is engaging, friendly, conversational, clear, and compelling. As you read the sales copy, it draws you in and makes you want to read more as it provides a ‘you can do it too’ attitude.

Take Aways:

•	Create a collection of success stories from your clients. If you don’t have any on hand, create a campaign to build an arsenal of success stories that you can use to prove success, rather than just promise it.

•	Short and to the point is not necessarily better when it comes to copywriting. Lengthy sales letters tend to outperform short letters that just get straight to the point.

Take Action:

To recap, here are six strategies you can apply to increase the muscle of your sales copy:

•	Solve the reader’s problem and give the problem a name.

•	Choose the speaker for a video sales letter carefully to ensure putting forth the right image for your product or service.

•	Write friendly, motivational copy instead of stiff, strictly informative sales letters.

•	When your copywriting is to generate leads, leave readers wanting more and you’ll get the lead.

•	Build an arsenal of success stories instead of just promising success.

•	Write long sales letters with headlines that interrupt [in the sense of grabbing people] and copy that engages and educates before making an offer.

Today’s post is another answer to a question–this time from Nathan Schubert, who wants to know what you should do with old links from directories and websites that still drive traffic if you’ve changed the content on your website.

OK. First off, you never want to have links to your site removed, even if it’s from a really bad website. Truth be told, there are some things you need to watch out for, but (generally speaking) it’s really pretty hard for someone to screw you up by linking to you (I said hard–but not impossible). Assuming that’s not the case and you are getting a bunch of off-topic traffic, there are better ways to deal with it.

You can use htaccess to redirect based on referring domain.

You can set up a 301 redirect for old pages that don’t exist.

If it’s getting a significant amount of traffic, set up a landing page to tell visitors that the content they are looking for no longer exists and that you’ve changed the focus of the site. Be polite, matter of fact, and straight to the point. Don’t be indignant or present a message that suggests people are a “bother” to you. I’d also set up 5 or 6 links to your most popular content or key pages. Encourage visitors to look around if they want. If you do redirect via 301, those links can also act as entry points for search engine spiders. Don’t let those links go to a 404 page; doing so just flushes the link equity down the toilet.
